Credentials

I have a BA in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Elementary Education with endorsements in Early Childhood Education, Reading, and Hearing Impaired Education. My educational experience includes 25 years in Preschool, Kindergarten, 1st/2nd grades, 4th grade, Adult Education, and Teacher Education.

For 12 years, I wrote parenting newsletters to the parents of the students in my classes. I am convinced that parents do the best job they possibly can. What they need is support to make changes from a punative parenting style to one of tender firmness and clear guidance. My columns offer how-to ideas that are easy to follow and very effective.

When I am away from my classroom, I love being out of doors and meeting people from around the world. When I travel with a sketch book, it is an invitation to everyone to peek over my shoulder and see their world through my eyes.

Together, we can change the world!

Professional Philosophy:

I have participated in the lives of over 500 children. I have come to believe that adults need to be tender, firm, and less than totally candid with small children. Families work best when democratic principles are applied with the gentle hand of authority.

Parenting Experience:

I am the parent of two grown sons who have often said they would have behaved better if they had known I would be going public. And, I am the joyful Grandmother of three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Parenting Columns:

My writing is based on stories from my family and my classroom. They are timely, helpful, and humorous. Each column is a small slice of life that can be applied to specific childhood issues. My goal is to nuture children, hold them accountible, and facilitate their growing into tender, caring, responsible teens and adults.

Travel Features:

My travel writing is based on my adventures in Europe, Mexico, and my own back yard. Even though I cannot afford to travel, I have managed to visit places near and far. I record my travels in a sketch book and use my sketches to illustrate my writing. I have found, with a sketchbook, that I become part of the scene rather than experiencing the rich cultures of our world through the lens of a camera. I live in and sketch in Oregon.
